Dear Parents/Carers,

A belated Happy New year to you all. I hope you enjoyed the festive period and are looking forward to the exciting opportunities that 2016 will bring.

It will be a historic moment in the life of SPS as the work on the long awaited New Build should finally begin. I am sure it will bring with it numerous challenges to overcome but the end result will be well worth the effort.

My New Year’s resolution for 2016 is to be more ‘mindful.’ It is the latest buzzword and there are numerous books (including colouring) and articles being written on the subject. If you can see through the inevitable jargon, the underlying message is that we spend too much time worrying about the past and the challenges of the future, and not enough time enjoying the present.

This is going to be my focus for the year and I am hoping that I can encourage the children and the staff to do the same.

Staff News

The New Year brings with it changes to the SPS staff team. I would like to welcome Emma Duncan. Emma will be operating as our Special Needs Coordinator for three days a week and will form part of our Special Needs Department. She will be joining Rowena Banks, who will be fulfilling the same function for the other two days of the week, when she returns from sick leave.

Nicola Joyce (SENCO from Chevening School) has been supporting the school in Rowena’s absence and this will continue until she returns.

Family Learning Session on Assessment – Tuesday 19th January at 1:45pm and 6:30pm

You will have received information on the Family Learning sessions planned for next week, which are designed to inform you of the New Assessment procedures. There will be a general overview of the arrangements, followed by Year Group presentations to outline the expected standards for that Year Group.

It is a starting point and we will ask for feedback through the Class Representatives to see if future information sessions are required going forward. If you are planning to attend the session and have not yet booked, could you please do so as soon as possible, so we are aware of the numbers to accommodate.  A reminder of how to book your places is included within this Newsletter.

Appointment of new Phase 3 Leader

I am delighted to announce that Mrs Jeffery has been appointed our new Phase 3 Leader. She will, without doubt, be a fantastic replacement for Mrs Barker who, herself, set a very high precedent as the previous Lead for Year 5 and 6. With the changes to the National Curriculum and increased expectations in both Literacy and Year 6, Mrs Barker is going to devote her energies to these two key areas.

I would like to take this opportunity to once more thank Mrs Barker for all her hard work and dedication to the role, and look forward to seeing it develop further under Mrs Jeffery’s leadership.

Alan Duffy

Hi, I’m Samantha Jeffery and I am the Phase 3 Leader and class teacher in 5A. After completing my degree in Primary Education at Brighton University, I worked for several years as a Year 5 and 6 teacher and Mathematics Coordinator at Wateringbury CE Primary School. I joined Sevenoaks Primary in 2012 to continue my experience in upper Key Stage 2. Alongside teaching in Year 5, I am currently Assessment for Learning Coordinator and Lead Mentor for students from Canterbury Christ Church University, taking great enjoyment in mentoring the next generation of teachers. I am also privileged to run the Ballet Club for Years 1 and 2 here at Sevenoaks.

I began teaching because of my own love of learning and my passion for helping children to reach their potential. I feel lucky to be part of a school which shares the same values as my own and which puts the children at the heart of everything we do. I am delighted my new role will enable me to make a difference to children’s education beyond those in my class through working closely with my Year 5 and 6 colleagues and facilitating the sharing of expertise. I look forward to the challenges and rewarding experiences that this role as Phase Leader will bring.

Mrs Edwards’ charity Hair Cut – Thursday 14th January

Tomorrow, Mrs Edwards (formerly Hornsbury) will be having her hair cut for charity. Little Princess Trust was originally set up in memory of a little girl called Hannah T by her parents, school and friends, who sadly lost her battle with cancer in 2005.

The charity provides real hair wigs free of charge to boys and girls throughout the UK who have lost their own hair through treatment for cancer. These wigs cost the charity over £350 each.

Nat will be getting 50cm cut off her hair, which is an incredible amount, and we are so proud of her for making the decision to do this for such a worthy cause.

If you would like to donate towards her fundraising for Little Princess Trust, there is a form in the main reception by Mrs Potter’s desk.

Donations can also be made via a JustGiving website: https://www.justgiving.com/Natalie-Hornsbury
Registered Charity No. 1113172

We look forward to seeing a transformed Nat, and well done from all at SPS!
