Year 3 Ancient Egypt Day

Dear Parents/Carers,

Christmas is a special time at Sevenoaks Primary School. It is impossible NOT to fall under the festive spell if you spend even the shortest moment here.

The weeks leading up to the end of term are ‘timeless’. A lot has changed in education, but Christmas remains special, largely untouched by the advances of time.

This week we have enjoyed the Foundation Stage Christmas concert and the Year 1 & 2 nativities. They were all wonderful and I was immensely proud of the children and staff. I do hope you also enjoyed the Festival of Trees. I had wanted to bring the event to the school for years and I was delighted when we were able to introduce it to the SPS calendar. It felt as if the whole school were in attendance and there was a lovely atmosphere. Thank you to Lisa Doleman and Lindsay Anderson for organising the event, Pui Jellett and the wonderful SPSA team, the staff, and of course the children for making the event so special and baking such fabulous cakes!

It is quite emotional this year as it will be the last Christmas in the current building and that this time next year we will be in the new building.

Thank you

As the year draws to a close, can I take this opportunity to thank all our staff for all their hard work. They are a truly

amazing group of dedicated professionals who do their upmost to support the children and I look forward to working with them in 2017.

I would also like to thank the SPSA and the many parent helpers and volunteers for their help over the last year.

The entire team, that is, the children, staff, parents, SPSA, volunteers and Governors, have met the challenges of fundraising this year with such enthusiasm and success and I look forward to seeing the fruits of this hard work in the new building.

2017 will be a pretty momentous year for SPS, and I hope that you will all join me as we look forward to moving into the new building and new era.

I would like to wish you all a wonderful Christmas and best wishes for the year ahead.

Alan Duffy

The gas works contractors responsible for the pipe works in Bradbourne Park Road have informed us that on Thursday 15th and Friday 16th December, the works will also affect Bradbourne Road.
The pipes in these roads (and further afield) have deteriorated and must be replaced. It is just unfortunate that they coincide with our new own building works.
They will be erecting barriers around the affected parts of the pavement to prevent any accidents, but wish to alert parents to this inconvenience in good time.
Please note that on Wednesday 14th December there will be no School Control Officer on patrol.
Newly elected Parent Governors

Following the recent Parent Governor election, we are pleased to announce the appointment of Sarah Collins and Miriam Nadarajah. We would like to extend our congratulations to both candidates and welcome them to the Sevenoaks Primary School Governing Body.

Lost Property
We have a VAST amount of lost property outside the office. Please could we ask that parents visit this week to collect any items that their child might have lost.
All items unclaimed by Friday 6th January will be recycled, sent to a charity or thrown out.
A huge thank you to Mrs Rowland and Mrs Evans for their tireless weekly clear-out efforts.
School shoes and outdoor shoes – a reminder
We would like to remind pupils that they must have a pair of school shoes here at school to wear inside, as well as a pair of suitable shoes/boots for the top field.
It is not acceptable to wear your outdoor footwear inside school as the mud brought in causes a lot of extra work for our cleaners.
Outdoor shoes are also not a part of the school uniform whilst inside the building.
Our main entrance Christmas tree
The largest tree in the school, in our main reception, is available to anyone who would like it. We ask that in return a donation is made towards the SPSA.
If you would like to take up this offer, please email the school on:
Please note that the tree must be collected on Friday 16th December.

The application period will close on 16th January 2017. Confident Parent Confident Children
We will be holding a five week course in the New Year 2017, designed to help parents learn how to become more assertive, as well as to build their children’s confidence.
A highly experienced external tutor will run these discussion-based sessions to share experiences, ideas, concerns and possible solutions. The course will also be tailored towards the specific group of parents, according to what they will find helpful.
The sessions will be on: 11th/18th/25th January & 1st/8thFebruary, all from 9:00 – 11:00am
Please note that spaces are strictly limited to 9 parents only, on a first come first served basis.
If you would like a place, please contact Sue Thompson in the main office on: 01732 453952 or
Stonepitts, a farm local to the school, would like to offer a £2.00 donation to the school for every Christmas tree bought by families, friends and staff.
If you would like to participate in this generous offer, simply produce a copy of this newsletter article when buying a tree and this will count towards the final donation to the school. If you are unable to print one off, call into our office for a copy from Mrs Sermon.
Additionally, Stonepitts are continuing their custom of making a donation for all trees sold to Help for Heroes, to whom they donated £1,250 last Christmas.
For further details, including directions please see their website: Stonepitts Farm

Student mobile phones in school

For those parents in Phase 3 who allow their children to bring a mobile phone to school, please could you remind them that they must be handed in to the school office at the start of each day, and collected at 3:20pm.

Missing scooter- update
A parent had reported that their daughter’s scooter went missing from the bicycle shed at the end of November whilst they were collecting their children.
We are pleased to report that the scooter was returned to the school grounds later that week.
Thank you to all those who looked out for it – we are glad it was returned to its owner.

Handball session – Knole Academy

On Wednesday 7th December, nine children from Year 5 attended a Kent School Games Handball coach and learn session at Knole Academy.

Handball is a combination of basketball, football and netball all rolled (no pun intended!) into one. It is a fast-paced game that is easy to learn. The children were taught 7 drill exercises that showed them the fundamental aspects of the game, and at the end of the session played a mini match.

The children were a true credit to our school and a member of staff there commented on their keenness throughout the session. Well done to Callum, Tom, Isabella, Matilda, Austin, Brooke, Joe, Kezia and Sam.

Vacancies for Breakfast Club staff

We currently have vacancies for Breakfast Club staff. The hours are from 7:30 – 9:00am five days a week, although we would consider job-share options too. These positions are for term time only.

For an application form, please contact Mrs Sermon in the school office on 01732 453952 or by email:

Bake Off competition winners and cake containers

A huge thank you to everyone who brought in cakes on Tuesday for our annual Festival of Trees and Bake Off.

The entries were all of such a high standard and we had to stop the judges from eating more than they needed to!! After much deliberation, the winners were selected as follows:

Phase 1 winner: Joshua (1A)
for his Festive Pastries
Phase 2 winner: Thea (3B)
for her Iced Victoria Sponge
Phase 3 winner: Kezia (5C)
for her chocolate brownies
The Christmas Tree trail winner was Thomas in 5A.
The money raised from trail donations, the cake sale, mulled wine and chocolate tombola totalled £787.57. This will increase when all the Christmas trees have been collected and paid for.
Thank you for all your generous support – all the money raised will go to our SPSA.
We have a large number of uncollected boxes from the Bake Off outside the school office. Please could you collect these at your earliest convenience.

Thank you
