Can you believe that we are nearly at the end of Term 1? I struggle with the thought that I only have 7 weeks left as Headteacher of SPS! It will go in the blink of an eye and I intend to savour every moment.
As is always the case at SPS, we pack so much into each term. The new Foundation Stage children have settled in incredibly well and are having a fantastic time. One of the great pleasures of being the Headteacher is the welcome I receive whenever I pop up to Phase 1 or I meet the children in the main school – it’s like being a minor celebrity!
One of my highlights of the year is the Year 6 annual trip to Blackland Farm, which took place last week. Although only 45 minutes away from school, it feels like we are in another world. The weather was phenomenal in sunny East Grinstead and the children and staff had a brilliant time.
The residential is an essential part of the Year 6 transition, and for many children, it is their first time spent away from home. They benefit so much from the experience and it is usually the number one ‘top memory’ of their time at SPS.
The staff also have the privilege of being with the children outside of the classroom and getting to know them a little more. They are fantastic ambassadors of the school and I am immensely proud of them all.
Other highlights from Term 1 have included:
- The ‘official’ opening of the new school
- ‘Mr Duffy’s Long Walk Home’
- Visit from Piers Torday (author) as part of the Sevenoaks Literacy Festival
- Various school trips – Crofton Roman Villa, Year 1 trip to the Vine, to name but two
- Year 1 Woodland Creatures Day – a personal favourite!
- Year 3 trip to London Zoo – better not mention the journey home!
- Aqua Splash and Football fixtures
Term 2 – The Last Leg!
We have even more excitement planned for Term 2. Events/activities will include:
- 6A children having the opportunity to benefit from the Bikeability programme
- SPSA Halloween Disco (sold out!)
- Year 4 trip to Lullingstone Country Park
- Festival of Trees – my favourite event!
- Christmas Bazaar
- The Last Dance Christmas Ball
- Nativities and Carol Service at St John’s Church
Nellie will go down as my most popular appointment! Our new school dog is proving to be a hit with the children and staff alike. It might appear to an unusual choice but she has already provided invaluable support to numerous pupils and adults. Nellie has a calming effect on those that she has contact with and also raises a smile when emotions may be a little low. I am sure she will be around during the numerous events in Term 2, so you will be able to say hello!
The Last Dance
As my daughter pointed out when she visited the school recently, I really am milking my departure from SPS! ‘The Last Dance’ is a farewell celebration but also a final opportunity to raise money for the school. The tickets are selling fast but there are a few remaining if you would like to join me. Ticket sales close Thursday 18th October!
Promises Auction – We desperately need your help! We are on the lookout for any items or ‘experiences’ which we can auction at the School Ball. Items previously donated by our kind parents have included tickets for sporting events, gardening services and live show recordings (Graham Norton, Jonathan Ross and Strictly Come Dancing), to name but a few. Please help us raise money for your children by contacting Lisa Doleman in the school office if you can help, or your company can sponsor part of the event. We shall await your call!
Hi, my name is Rowena Banks and I am one of the Assistant Heads and Inclusion Lead.
I am delighted to be returning to Sevenoaks Primary after a short break in which I worked in two London schools as SEN advisor and then Assistant Head for Inclusion. Within these schools, I expanded my experience of supporting children with a wide variety of need and also developed my leadership skills.
I have been teaching since I left university in my early twenties and have worked in London, Kent and across the world in children’s homes, primary and secondary schools and in missionary schools. I have a master’s degree in Inclusion and I am also a tutor for teachers undergoing their qualification to become a SENco.
My passion is to support children (and their families) with additional needs, to be safe and happy within school and, therefore, to achieve their potential.
I returned to Sevenoaks Primary as I knew it to be a school which values all children and where there is a determination to drive forward the inclusion agenda. There is a real team approach to helping children achieve academic potential as well as focussing on wellbeing and involvement.
I am a strong believer in the importance of working alongside families, so please come in to see me if you have any questions.
Harvest Festival – Thursday, 18th October
- Phase 1 (Foundation Stage and Year 1) - we would be very grateful if parents could bring their donations to the main office at morning drop-off. If this is not convenient, please hand your items to your child’s class teacher / teaching assistant.
- Phases 2 & 3 (Years 2-6) can bring their donations directly to the main hall as they arrive in the morning, prior to entering their designated playground.
Additionally, if there are any parents / carers who are able to help transport the donations from school to St John the Baptist Church on Quakers Hall Lane, please could you let the school office know.

Breakfast Club and Play4Ages
Following completion of the external groundworks around the front and rear car parks, we are pleased to be able to re-open the drop-off zone for Breakfast Club and Play4Ages. To enable the drop-off zone to operate safely, we will be introducing a new one-way system, with effect from Term 2, for all staff and parents:
- New one-way system – entry by car will be from the rear barrier gate on Bradbourne Road, exiting by the main entrance barrier gate on Bradbourne Park Road
- Breakfast Club – the barrier gate on Bradbourne Road will be open for drop off until
- Play4Ages – the barrier gate on Bradbourne Road will be open for collecting from 5.00 pm
At all other times, both barrier gates will be closed and parking will be around the school perimeter. May we please take the opportunity to remind everyone to park safely and considerately - thank you!
Change of date! Foundation Stage and Year 6 Parent Consultations
Secondary School Offer Day is Friday 1st, March 2019 and, therefore, parent consultation week for Foundation Stage and Year 6 has moved to:
Monday, 4th March to Thursday, 7th March 2019, inclusive
Following the recent nomination process, the Governing Body are pleased to announce the unopposed appointment of two new parent governors. Congratulations to Jo Tidball and Patrick Widdowson and welcome to the Governing Body!
