Dear Parents/Carers,

On Sunday 4th October 2015 at 2:00pm, Sevenoaks Primary School held the inaugural Family 5K event in conjunction with Sevenoaks School. The event was perhaps one of the best we have ever organised, certainly in my time at SPS, and we have been inundated with positive comments from everyone that took part.

We were blessed with the weather – the sun shone throughout and the venue was spectacular. When the concept of the event was first discussed, we had a vison of drawing the local community together for a family event, which would raise funds for the New Building and other local charities. The reality exceeded all expectations.

It was great to see so many people taking part and getting active. We had participants from across the Partnership Schools, numerous Sports Associations, local businesses and community groups, with the most obscure being a family on holiday to the UK from Australia!

The atmosphere on the start line was fantastic. There were lots of smiling faces as the participants started on the 5K course and relieved but still smiling faces as they crossed the line with requests to repeat the event next year!

The success of the event was not down to chance, though,  but through the hard work from a dedicated team of parents, staff and governors.

I would like to offer a huge thank you to Ginny Al-Rais and Melanie McInerney, who masterminded the event. They devoted many hours liaising with Sevenoaks School, obtaining sponsors for the 5K, filling the goodie bags and setting up on the day.

The extended team include Pui Jellett and Arina Jones. Pui has attended every event this year and been actively involved in all of them. Her energy is boundless and we really do owe her a debt of gratitude for her consistently hard work.
Other helpers included Dann Gadd, Simon Hooper, Alison Potter, Sue Thompson, Lisa Doleman, Rachel Sermon, Wendy Lissenden, Katherine Ratcliff and Andy Al-Rais.
On the actual day, it became a true SPS team effort with the support of numerous parents, governors and staff in setting up the various stalls and marking out the track. I would like to acknowledge everyone individually but I will almost certainly leave somebody out, so I will simply say an enormous thank you to everyone for their help and support.
Sevenoaks School were amazing, firstly in agreeing to host and co-organise the event but also in providing the marshals, setting out the course and their hands on support throughout the day. A special thank you should go to Arabella Stuart and Vanessa Fitzgerald who were incredible, the event could not have happened without their help.
I am now a signed up member of the Georgina Burnett Fan Club. Georgina is a BBC South East Weather Girl and this was her first experience as a celebrity starting an event. Georgina was a trouper and not only fired the starting gun but also helped set up in the morning and coped with the challenges of appearing alongside a yeti!
Finally, it is important that we acknowledge our sponsors. They not only contributed invaluable money towards our new building but also supported the Family 5K on the day. Thank you to the Sevenoaks Medical Centre, Ibbett Mosely, Berry & Lamberts Solicitors, Bat & Ball Sports, Sevenoaks Computers and A-Plan Insurance.
Future Events
The next event on our hectic social calendar is our Firework Display on Saturday 7th November. It will be quite an emotional event as it will be the last in the current format. This time next year there will be a new building emerging on the bottom field. That is not to say that it will be the last ever Bonfire Night but it will certainly be different in the future!
I am currently working on my next ‘Mr Duffy Challenge’ for 2016. This time taking it to a wider audience and going national, well, more precisely, to London! At the moment it is still in the early stages of development but I am planning a walk, taking in the major London bridges and a number of the major landmarks. I am planning to call in at the Shard, the O2 Dome, Big Ben and the ArcelorMittal Orbit along the way, to add a little bit of a challenge! If all goes according to plan I will go up the Shard, over the Dome, climb up the steps of Big Ben and abseil down the Orbit.

I already have the London Bridge Hospital lined up as a sponsor, and Michael Fallon has agreed to form part of the reception committee, hopefully at Number 10 or at The Houses of Parliament.

No date is fixed as yet but I am hoping to complete the challenge around Easter 2016 to coincide with the commencement of the new building.

I will hopefully persuade parents who may work in London to join me for part of, or the entire walk. If you may be interested, you know of a possible sponsor, or have an idea of how we can make the challenge even more challenging, please do let me know.

Sevenoaks Primary School Security Motto

‘Our aim is to make Sevenoaks Primary School safe, happy and welcoming for everyone.’

With our motto at heart, I would like to remind parents of the school protocol for dropping off and collecting the children.

  • Unless attending the Breakfast Club or another extra-curricular activity, the Key Stage 2 children MUST NOT be left unattended on the school grounds before 8:40am. Only from 8:40am will there be a member of staff on the playground to supervise
  •  The Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 children MUST be supervised by their parents/carers until they enter their classrooms at 8:50am. Please then vacate the playgrounds by 8:55am to avoid distracting the children in class
  • The Key Stage 1 playground gate and the doors to the corridors/classrooms throughout the school will be closed at 8:55am. Any child arriving after this time should enter through the Main office and be signed in by their parent/carer
  • If a parent needs to pass a message to a teacher, this should be done via the office, as the teachers will need to focus their attention on the class
  • The Key Stage 1 gate will be opened by the staff at 3:15pm and we would kindly ask parents to wait on the left (black) side of the play area and not near to the classroom doors
  • If the children are being collected by another adult, please inform the teacher/receptionist
  • Parents needing to enter the building should do so via the main entrance and sign in at the front desk.

The above arrangements are designed with your child’s best interests at heart and I trust you will support the school in ensuring they are implemented.


Election of Parent Governors
You will have received a letter and nomination form for our three Parent Governor vacancies. If you are unable to print off the form and wish to have a copy, please contact the main reception.
There is a distinct chill in the air and the nights are drawing in! Please could we ask that you ensure your child is dressed suitably for the weather and brings their coat into school every day.
Admission to Primary School – September 2016
If your child was born between 1st September 2011 and 31st August 2012 and, therefore, due to start in September 2016, you will be able to apply for your child’s place in primary school from 9:00am on Tuesday 10th November 2015. The application period will close at midnight on Friday 15th January 2016. If you do not have access to the internet and would like to come into school to complete your application, please contact Mrs Doleman, our Admissions Officer, in the school office to arrange an appointment.
If the child you are applying for has a sibling currently at Sevenoaks Primary School, please come to the main office to place your child’s name on the Sibling List by Mrs Potter’s Desk.
Appeal for lunch time toys for playground
Do you have any unwanted Duplo, MegaBloks and boys’ dressing up clothes? We would welcome any donations for our Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 playgrounds for lunch times. They can be dropped off in the main reception area.

KM Walk to School Challenge – 21st October 2015
The next date for our county wide Walk to School Challenge is Wednesday 21st October. We would like to encourage as many as possible children as possible to walk to school on that date.
We understand that for some, walking here is not possible, and we will make arrangements to ensure that they do not miss out on the challenge during the school day.
Battery recycling
We offer a facility for recycling any household batteries. If you have any at home and wish to dispose of them safely, please bring them in to the main reception. We have disposal boxes in the staff area.
Request for spare KS2 swim wear
The school would warmly welcome any donations of Key Stage 2 spare swim wear. It is so useful to be able to have some available on those occasions when a child forgets their kit and the parent is unable to bring it to school in time for their swimming lessons.

Citizens Advice in Otford

Sevenoaks Citizens Advice runs an advice centre in the Otford Parish Rooms every Tuesday from 10am to 2pm. They can help with benefits, debt, employment, relationships, housing and much more.
You can just drop in to discuss an issue, if the adviser is free, or you can telephone 01732 440488 (leave a message and you will be called back) to discuss the matter over the phone, and then ask for an appointment at Otford (if appropriate) so that you can be sure an adviser will be available to see you.
Alternatively, Sevenoaks Citizens Advice is open for drop in advice from 10am to 2pm on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays – they are situated next to the main Sevenoaks Library – or you can email with details of your query.
Parking in the Bradbourne Road/Camden Road area
We have been made aware, through complaints from local residents, that increasingly unsafe parking is taking place in the near vicinity of the school. There have been reports of people parking up on the double yellow lines on the blind corner of Camden Road, which renders the area incredibly dangerous for children to cross.
We are also concerned to hear that such drivers, when approached by concerned parents, have also been verbally abusive.
If any parents/carers have any concerns over obstruction and/or parking incidents, we strongly encourage you to contact Kent Police by calling 101 (the police non-emergency number).
You can also alert Sevenoaks District Council of any double yellow line and zig-zag offences by calling 01732 227000.
We appreciate that parking in the area is very congested at drop-off and pick-up, however, we will not tolerate abuse of any kind over an issue as important as child safety.
Play 4 Ages October 2015 Holiday Play-scheme
Please find attached details of Play4Ages’ play scheme for this half term. They can offer a variety of activities, along with breakfast, tea and dessert plus refreshments. The Scheme is open from 08:00 – 18:00.
