PARENT CONSULTATION WEEK

 

Dear Parents/Carers,
Welcome back! I am rapidly approaching my sixteenth year at SPS and it is difficult to think of something new to say at the beginning of a new academic year! I’ve looked back at previous newsletters and I appear to have covered most bases, so what will be different about SPS this year?
The beauty of working in a school and, especially SPS, is that no two days are the same. This year, as with every year, we have both new children and staff. There will be fresh challenges and opportunities and the usual ‘rollercoaster ride’ that is life at SPS, but as long as the ups exceed the downs and we enjoy the ride I will be happy.
My overriding aim for 2015-16 is that I want this year to be enjoyable.  I saw a sign on a school on a trip to my home town during the summer - it said simply ‘We are here to enjoy’ and I want to apply that simple message to SPS.
 
New Staff
We have a number of new staff joining the team this year and warmly welcome them to the school. They are as follows:

Following a Summer of wedding celebrations Sam Hartley is now known as Mrs Jeffery and Nat Hornsbury as Mrs Edwards. Congratulations!
 
Rowena Banks
 
Unfortunately, Rowena has not, as yet, been able to return to school this term due to a back injury. We are very lucky to have continued to secure the services of Nicola Joyce, who supported the school in the Summer term. She is an extremely experienced SENCO and has also been identified as an SLE (Specialist Leader of Education). Nicola will be in school on Wednesdays and Thursdays if parents wish to discuss any SEN issues with her until Rowena is fit to come back.
 
If you have any other questions regarding your child, please do not hesitate to contact the school office to speak to one of the senior management team.
 
New Build
The process has now begun in earnest and today sees the start of the six week intensive design period. This is a crucial stage as we will be living with the outcome for 50 years plus. I would hope that by the end of Term 2 (Christmas), we will be in a position to share the plans with you and other interested parties. Up to this point, the only plans available have been provided by the children’s wonderful imaginations and it will be lovely to have an actual visual representation of the New Build.
 
Fundraising
Dragon Boat Festival – Bewl Water – Saturday 12th September
This Saturday we are making a splash at the Dragon Boat Festival at Bewl Water. We must have been taking part in this event for over 10 years now and it truly is a fantastic way to kick start the new term. This year we have two boats, crewed by a team of 16 rowers and one very brave drummer perched precariously at the front.
Our recent track record has been very impressive and we have made the finals in the last few years. I trust this year will be equally successful and that those participating will enjoy both the social and the competitive side of the day in equal measure!

Sevenoaks Family 5K – Sunday 4th October 2015, 2pm Knole Park, starting at Sevenoaks School

If you haven’t signed up for the event yet, please do. The places are going fast and we don’t want anyone disappointed to have not got a place. Nearly 400 children/adults have now signed up on line through Eventbrite. It would be lovely to have as many SPS parents/children/staff participating as possible.

Security
 
It is our aim to ensure that Sevenoaks Primary School is safe, happy and welcoming for everyone. The priority is the safety of the children and our security protocol has been devised for their benefit, therefore we ask for your support in implementing the following:
  • All parents/carers that need to enter the buildings should come to the Main Office entrance, report to Mrs Potter (Attendance/Receptionist), sign in the visitor’s book and wear a visitor’s badge at all times
  • Volunteer readers/helpers must also sign in at the Main Office and wear an appropriate identification badge at all times
  • All parents/carers should make an appointment to meet with a member of staff and should follow the same procedures as above
  • If you have any concerns regarding security, please speak to the Assistant Head Teachers or the Head Teacher.
We ask everyone to be patient – good security can be frustrating! 
 
Clubs
Information regarding the club timetable for 2015-16 will be circulated in the next week or so, with the intention of commencing clubs towards the end of September.
 
Lost property volunteer
 
Sadly, at the end of last year we lost our fantastic parent volunteer, Mrs Milburn, who would regularly tidy up and reunite our overflowing Lost Property with their owners. Her children have now all left Sevenoaks Primary and we were  sorry to see her go.
 
If anyone would like to volunteer to take over it would be hugely appreciated – not only by the staff but also the parents when their child returns home with their possessions!

Healthy School also starts at home!
Starting this term, Sevenoaks Primary School has its very own Boot Camp specifically for parents, run by TOTALI FIT. Ali is a fully insured Advanced Personal Trainer and a mum at the school. Sessions will start at 9:00am for an hour on the school’s top field, on a Monday and Friday morning currently. Sessions are pay as you go, costing £5.00 a sessions and a percentage of the money will be donated to the school’s New Build campaign. Vacancies at Sevenoaks Primary School

LSA – Key Stage 1 (pprox.. 27.5 hours per week – term time only)
We are looking to appoint a Learning Support Assistant to work with children with social communication needs and global delay. The successful candidate will have:
  • Experience working within a school environment
  • Ideally have supported a child with complex needs or, an SEN background
  • The ability to work under the direction and guidance of the class teacher and Inclusion Manager, to assist in the educational, emotional and social development of the child
  • The ability to work in partnership with other colleagues within a caring, supportive and hardworking team.
  • Salary: KR3 (equates to pprox.. £8,500 p.a)
 
 
Teaching Assistant (Full-time, fixed term November 2015 – May 2016)
(27.5 hours per week – term time only)
The successful candidate will:
  • work under the direction and guidance of the class teacher
  • have the ability to work in partnership with other colleagues within a caring, supportive and hardworking team
  • have previous experience working as a teaching assistant, or within a primary school setting
  • Salary:  KR3 – 5 £14,527 - £19,222 (equates to £8900 - £11,785 pro rata

Midday Supervisor

Price & Buckland uniform orders - apology and update
 
We would like to pass on an apology from the Sales Manager at Price & Buckland for the level of service they have offered our parents/carers over the Summer holidays. Considerable technical problems resulted in orders automatically selecting the school as the delivery address but without the school name. As a result some orders have arrived here and some are held at the Post Office. They are confident that the error has been rectified and they have been resending many of your orders to try to rectify the situation.
 
They have also incorrectly been advertising the ‘old style’ bookbags on their website, which are landscape in shape. Our new bookbags are a new design, in a portrait shape. If you have received one of the old bookbags in error, please return them to the school office and we will swap them for the new version.

 

Medical Reminders

  • We would like to remind parents/carers that following a bout of sickness or diarrhoea, children must not return to school until 48 hours after their final episode of illness
  • Should your child (or their siblings) contract an infectious disease (particularly chicken-pox or cold sores) please inform the school office as soon as possible, as we have a child in school with a weakened immune system
  • Should your child have asthma, please ensure that you supply the school with an in-date inhaler as soon as possible. Parents/carers will need to bring the inhaler into school in its original packaging with the prescriber’s information label attached and to complete the necessary paperwork
  • PLEASE NOTE THAT WE OPERATE A ‘NO NUTS’ POLICY IN SCHOOL
  • Polite notice – NO MEDICATION SHOULD BE BROUGHT INTO SCHOOL BY A PUPIL. Should your child be prescribed medication by a doctor that requires administration during the school day, it is the responsibility of the parent/carer to bring in that medication (such medication to be in its original container, complete with dosage instructions). As before, prescribed medication will also require parents/carers to complete the necessary paperwork
  • ONLY PRESCRIBED MEDICATION CAN BE ADMINISTERED BY A MEMBER OF STAFF
  • If your child has any changes to their medical information, please email the details to manager@sevenoaks.kent.sch.uk        

Absences from school

You can report your child’s absence from school due to illness via the following email address: absence@sevenoaks.kent.sch.uk

Once you have emailed your child’s absence from school, there will be no need to follow up with a letter to the class teacher when your child returns to school. However, please note that we are unable to accept any other messages to the class teachers, school office or club leaders via this email address.

The telephone answer machine will still be in use to report absences due to illness (01732 453952, Option 1) or alternatively please call in to the school office.

Dragon Boat Festival – Saturday 12th September
 
This Saturday is the much anticipated Dragon Boat Festival Event at Bewl Water and, once again, our teams (Sevenoaks Scullers 1 & 2) will be battling it out to see if we can beat last year’s success. In 2014 Sevenoaks Scullers 1 came 5th overall and Sevenoaks Scullers 2 came 6th out of 42 teams competing. No doubt they will try their hardest to beat that record!
