Dear Parent/Carers,

Ah it’s definitely that time of year again when the sound of donkey impressions emanates from the Main Hall as the Foundation Stage begin preparations for their Nativity performance! The countdown to Christmas has now begun and starts in earnest with the SPSA Christmas Bazaar in a couple of weeks’ time.

The SPSA have already beaten me to it but I would like to offer my own thanks for all those parents, staff and friends of the school that contributed to an outstanding Bonfire Night. It was our biggest and the best, demonstrated by the fact that it was a sell-out and fitting that our group of ex-parents should go out on a bang. I would like to say a huge thank you to Andrew Thompson and his Firework Lighters: Mike Keeley, Clive Lewis, Richard Potter and Roger Sargeant who are bowing out after years of dedicated service. Hopefully they will return next year but just watching from the safety of the playground.

Football Success – Sevenoaks School 5-aside Tournament

It is fair to say that this has not been the most successful start to a football season for SPS. Out of the opening seven matches, our best result was a draw! On Friday 15th November, the team took part in the annual indoor 5 aside tournament at Sevenoaks School. The competition included all of the top teams in the area and we are usually one of the favourites. However, after our challenging start to the season I was not too optimistic about our chances.

In the opening match we lost 4 nil to Amherst and despite some good football we found it impossible to hit the back of the net. We managed to hit just about everything else including each other but the goal eluded us.

However, out of adversity can come triumph. It would have been easy for heads to have slumped and for the team to have given up but they are made of stronger stuff at SPS. The team proceeded to win the next three matches and were left with a final fixture against Churchill School. Nothing less than victory was enough if we were to win the trophy and despite going a goal behind, the team rallied round to win 3-1.

It was an epic performance which will go down in SPS folklore! Congratulations to all of the team, especially Jacob Ivell who was named man of the tournament. Thanks also to Richard Holliday the football coach who has worked so hard with the team over the last term.

This is another trophy for our cabinet, not that I am counting!!

Children in Need

Last Friday was also Children In Need Day. I love days like this - the school was transformed and there was a special atmosphere about the place. The majority of children and staff wore their pyjamas for the day (for a small fine), which made it interesting for my parent tour! As well as having a good deal of fun, the event raised over £500 for children’s charities in the UK.

Thank you to the children and staff and to parents for helping to choose appropriate attire.

Chess Match – Tuesday 12th November

Twelve of our finest players took to the boards against Walthamstow Hall Junior School for the ‘home’ leg of our match. Within ten minutes we had won the first five games. Numbers 6,7,8 soon followed and then came two draws. Another victory for game 11 and then it was all down to the last game. Chivalry over took the competitive spirit and Walthamstow Hall were allowed to salvage some pride, winning the final game. Congratulations to our victorious team and thank you to the parents who provided very welcome cakes and refreshments.

Security Protocol

Every year we send a reminder to parents about our security protocol and it just so happens that it is that time of year again.

The Sevenoaks Primary security motto:

‘Our aim is to make Sevenoaks Primary school safe, happy and welcoming for everyone’.

Parents/Carers and other visitors

  • All visitors, including contractors, to come to the main office entrance, report to the receptionist, sign in the visitor’s book and wear an identification or visitor’s badge.
  • All parents to make an appointment to meet with a member of staff and to follow the same procedure as above.
  • The cleaning company, voluntary readers, and other services must sign in at the School Office and wear an appropriate identification badge at all times. Kent Music School have their own signing in procedure.
  • Parents/Carers to be reminded of our security strategies on a regular basis through the Headteacher newsletter and the school website.
  • If any adult is seen behaving suspiciously both in the school grounds or nearby, please alert a member of staff immediately.

We ask everyone to be patient – good security can be frustrating!!

Family Learning Session – Wednesday 4th December 2013

We are delighted to be able to offer our Parents and Carers an evening Family Learning Session on Wednesday 4th December at 7.00pm. Mrs Bromwich will be running the session on Phonics and Reading for Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1. Specifically:

How phonics is taught at SPS

  • Reading books sent home and sharing books with your child
  • Additional resources to support phonic learning and wider reading

Non Uniform Day – Friday 29th November

The ‘fine’ for the children wearing their own clothes on Friday will be:

FS/KS1 children – Bring a Bottle (with parental help please!) Bottles should be brought down to the main reception area.

KS2 - £2.00 or chocolates

All the fines will contribute towards the SPSA Christmas Bazaar, held on Saturday 7th December. Please note that this Non Uniform Day is not compulsory and children are not expected to take part or contribute.

Admission to Primary School – September 2014

If your child was born between 01/09/2009 and 31/08/2010 you are now able to start online applications for Primary School places. The application process will close on 15th January 2014 - if you do not have access to the internet and would like to come into school to complete your application, please contact Mrs Doleman in the school office to arrange an appointment.

CALLING ALL SIBLINGS

If the child you are applying for has a sibling currently at Sevenoaks Primary School, PLEASE let the school office know as soon as possible, thank you!

Secondhand Clothes Shop

The wonderful ladies who run our secondhand clothes shop on Mondays from 3-4pm would like to update parents and carers on stock availability. New items are now being phased out with the eventual intention to be that all new stock can be ordered by parents online through our stockists Price and Buckland (the link can be found on the school website). The exception to this will be new school ties which will still be available from the shop.

Bradbourne Park Preschool Vacancy

The Preschool in our grounds are looking for a Preschool Assistant to join the staff team as soon as possible. The role includes working as a Key Person to provide safe, high quality care and education for children attending the setting.

Candidates without a Level 3 qualification in Early Years Education & Childcare will be considered, but a willingness to undertake training is essential. A full enhanced DBS Disclosure will be required for the role.

Further details and Application Forms are available from Jenny Avery at Bradbourne Park Preschool. Enquiries by email: bradbourneparkpreschool@gmail.com
