INSET DAY – NO CHILDREN IN SCHOOL

Dear Parents/Carers,

The term is now in full swing and the children are having so much fun learning thematically, in their classrooms. They are learning about a variety of topics, from water to dragons, and it is wonderful to hear how enthusiastic the children are about their learning and their vibrant classrooms.

In other news, we are also focussing heavily on Mental First Aid and are training our whole school staff in this important skill. We are currently pairing with West Heath School to train our staff in skills which support our inclusive practise. We are proud of the recognition we are receiving about this.

We have also been approved to support teaching training placements in our school for next year, so we are really excited about the opportunities this will bring, to both our staff and children.

Wishing you all a positive week ahead.

Best wishes,
Mrs Malone
Head Teacher

Drop and Go!
Amazingly, we are already into our fourth week of the new academic year!

The children are settled in and we are keen to promote their independence, as well as our school value, ‘Perseverance’.  At morning drop-off, we would encourage parents/carers to say goodbye and leave their children (in Years 2-6) at the playground gate.

Thank you for your support.

Clubs
Our vast array of clubs started this week and the children are already benefitting from the varied activities on offer.

As a courtesy to club leaders (and to help them with their registers), if your child will be absent from a club for whatever reason, please let the club leader know in advance. You can do this by sending a letter addressed to the club leader or, alternatively, by emailing our dedicated absence email address absence@sevenoaks.kent.sch.uk.

Parent Volunteers Induction

Are you one of our volunteers or helpers? Are you already involved in the school, regularly supporting with reading, swimming, trips, curriculum areas or clubs? Would you like to be?

If you are, a huge ‘thank you!’ It is great to have family and friends supporting our provision in different ways.

Miss Durkin, Deputy Head Teacher, is going to be running an Induction Session for parent helpers, covering some important areas that all adults working in school, and with children, should be aware of. There are two dates available; we hope this gives you the opportunity to come to the session that best suits you. There will be biscuits at both! Please do attend one of the sessions, if you can:

  • Wednesday 9th October 9:00-10:00am
  • Thursday 10th October 2:30-3:20pm

If you are not yet volunteering, but would like to, please see your child’s class teacher.

Breakfast Club – Drop-off

In our previous newsletter, we asked parents to please escort their children to the doors of Breakfast Club. As you will appreciate, this is for the safety of the children.

In the same vein, please may we remind parents/carers to use the designated drop-off zone (behind the gazebo) before dropping off their children at the Breakfast Club doors. We have had instances of cars parking just inside the main gates. This is not a parking zone! Not only does this cause blockages in the car park, it is a concern for the safety of pedestrians crossing the car park.
Thank you for your support.

Pupil Premium Funding

Are you in receipt of Government benefit payments? Is your child post adoptive/ in local authority care? If so, your child may benefit from Pupil Premium Funding.   Please see our website here for more details.

For every registered child, Sevenoaks Primary School receives £1,320 per year. This money is used in many different ways depending on the needs of the children, among them:

  • Providing small group work with experienced staff
  • Offering 1-1 support
  • Additional teaching and learning opportunities, such as music lessons, either in-house or with an external provider
  • Financial support for swimming and curriculum visits

It is now easy to apply on-line at:
http://www.kent.gov.uk/education-and-children/schools/free-school-meals

Alternatively, please come into school, bringing your National Insurance number with you and the ladies in the School Office will be happy to go through the process with you.

Receipt of these funds plays a vital part in the education that we can provide for Pupil Premium children throughout the school. Many thanks to everyone who is able to apply and does – this really is of huge benefit to Pupil Premium children!

Football at Knole Academy – Match Report by SPS Football Team Players

On Tuesday 17th September 2019, the SPS Football Team walked to Knole Academy with Mr Jarrett.

Our first game was against Churchill School. It was a fairly even game, however, SPS came out on top. To go along with that, we also did some good defending and scored neat goals.

Our final game was against Otford Primary School. It was a pretty one-sided game. However, we did let in a few sloppy goals due to some questionable defending!

All in all, we enjoyed it a lot. Hopefully, if we play again, we will win more games. Come and along and support us!

Scores:
Churchill v SPS

2        :    3

Otford     v SPS

Remember the Summer?! Wimbledon 2019 – Report by Tennis Players

On Friday 12th July 2019, some lucky pupils and staff from our Tennis Team
at Sevenoaks Primary were treated to an extraordinary day trip to
Wimbledon. Everybody going, including Mrs Malone (our Headteacher), could not wait for the
day to arrive from the moment we found out.

Just as everyone had expected, we had a truly astonishing time, and having
Court One tickets meant that we could go pretty much anywhere!

We saw lots of different games including watching the Ladies' wheelchair
doubles and seeing Rafael Nadal take on Roger Federer from Henman Hill! We
also had a go on an epic Virtual Reality tennis video game in which Toby
topped the leader board, thrashing Venus Williams and even the all-time
favourite, Andy Murray! Before we went home, we were allowed to buy a
souvenir and were spoilt for choice.

After a truly mind-blowing trip to Wimbledon it was time to leave. We were
sad to go home but couldn't wait to tell our friends and family what a
great time we had experienced.

Spring Bulbs

The beds in front of the main building have looked pretty throughout the summer, but we do have some space which we would now love to fill with spring bulbs - for example, snowdrops, crocus, daffodils, tulips, etc. It would be fantastic if our school families could help in the following ways:

  • Buying bulbs (small is best as they are easier to plant!). Please bring these to the School Office before the end of Term 1 (last day, Thursday 17th October).
  • Planting bulbs during the school day (between 8.00am and 6.00pm). Please involve your children if you wish, either before school, or after! Please bring your own trowel (or dibber!) if you have one. If anyone has spare trowels at home, which they are happy to loan to the school, that would be great, too. We would like to start planting at the beginning of Term 2 (first day, Monday 28th October).

Thank you for helping to make our grounds look amazing in the spring!

Secondary School Information Updates

‘Tis the season for Open Days! Please take a look at the Transfer to Secondary School - Sevenoaks Primary School page on our school website for updates on forthcoming open days/taster days at secondary schools.

Mental Health in Children – Developing Understanding, Taking Action

Sevenoaks Primary School: Tuesday 8th October 2019 1.45pm – 3.15pm (Main Hall)

We would like to welcome you to attend this 90-minute session where David Perridge, Strategic Head of Staff Development and Outreach at West Heath School, will guide us through the following:

  • An exploration of what we mean by “Mental Health”
  • Some of the neuro-biological processes that influence children’s mental health
  • Some practical approaches to supporting those with mental health issues and in raising well-being generally

David Perridge

David has been in education for 30 years, the past 16 of them at West Heath, an Outstanding school for children and young people with Social, Emotional and Mental Health Issues. As well as holding an MSc in Applied Positive Psychology, David is also a Mental Health First Aid Facilitator.

West Heath Outreach

As part of meeting its charitable objectives, West Heath is committed to the support of fellow professionals working with children and young people. In the course of 2019 – 2020, they will be working with the Sevenoaks Partnership to provide Mental Health First Aid training alongside sessions covering issues of concern, such as Trauma and ASD. They will also be working in greater depth with both Sevenoaks Primary School and Shoreham Primary School.

We look forward to seeing you there.
