What do we mean by ‘Safeguarding’ and ‘Child Protection?

Sevenoaks Primary School is fully committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all children, and expects all staff and volunteers to share in this commitment. Our culture of ‘it could happen here’ enables us to be alert to changes and concerns. All staff follow the ‘5 Rs of safeguarding.’

Safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children is defined by ‘Keeping children safe in education 2025’ (KCSIE) as…

  • Providing help and support to meet the needs of children as soon as problems emerge.
  • Protecting children from maltreatment, whether that is within or outside the home, including online.
  • Preventing the impairment of children’s’ mental and physical health or development.
  • Ensuring that children grow up in circumstances consistent with the provision of safe and effective care.
  • Taking action to enable all children to have the best outcomes.

Everyone who comes into contact with children and their families, has a role to play in safeguarding children. School staff are particularly important, as they are in a position to identify concerns early, and provide support for children and their families, to prevent concerns from escalating. This support might be from our in-house offer, or through referrals to outside agencies. The role of a safeguarding team is never to investigate, but to report and refer. Whilst we recognise that conversations around safeguarding children can be awkward and challenging for our community, we are all deeply committed at Sevenoaks Primary School to achieve the very best outcomes for our children.

Reporting a safeguarding concern:

As a community, it is vital that we all look out for each other, and seek help and advice where appropriate. If you feel you have a safeguarding concern about a child that you would like to report, there are may avenues you can use.

If you believe a child to be in immediate danger, always ring 999.

Online safety at Sevenoaks Primary School

At Sevenoaks Primary School we understand that technology, artificial intelligence, and the internet open up incredible opportunities for learning, creativity, and connection. From helping children explore new ideas to enabling them to communicate with friends and discover exciting hobbies. The digital world can be a truly positive space. Our children are growing up in a fast-paced technological world, where many of the jobs they will carry out as adults, have not even been invented yet.

Just like any environment, it’s important for our children to know how to navigate the online world safely. Our computing and bespoke PSHE curriculums not only support our children to experience computing skills alongside how to use technology safely and respectfully, but also teaches them strategies to use when something worries them or makes them feel unsafe. Our aim is always to help our children enjoy all the benefits technology offers whilst staying protected.

The following policies have been created to maintain our high expectations around respectful behaviour and safety whilst using technology and when online.

Our comprehensive school filtering and monitoring system restricts access to inappropriate materials. Robust safeguarding procedures are also in place to enable our school safeguarding team to address concerns that may arise in school.

For some of our community, using technology and the internet safely at home can be challenging, so below we have provided information on safe use of technology and Internet access which we hope you will find helpful.
